With the opening of the Soo Locks, the 2014-2015 shipping season is officially underway. However, do to severe ice conditions, it is expected to be a slow start to the season. No vessel has transited the locks since its opening at 12:01 AM of today and only a few vessels are sailing across the entire Great Lakes.

Update

I just wanted to apologize to the fact that none of the content I said would be on this blog over the winter appeared. I was much more busier than I thought I would be. I will try to do this soon but for now, I want to report that two ships have moved out of lay-up and have loaded ore at Escanaba. Those ships are the Roger Blough and Jospeh L Block. This is a very rare trip for the Blough, being that she almost exclusively gets her ore from Duluth and Two Harbors.

That is all. I am excited that ships have begun to come out of lay-up and will continue to monitor things as the 2014-2015 shipping season starts up. I hope you are as excited as I am!
