First Ship to Lay-up and Updates

Hi, everyone

I just wanted to report that the G L Ostrander and her barge Integrity arrived in Milwaukee on the 15th to lay-up at the salt dock.

Furthermore, the reason for my absence is because I can't access my source of ship reporting, Who knows when I'll be able to access it, but hopefully soon because the end of the season is nearing.

Some News about my Blog

 Hi, Everyone!
You may be thinking that I said that I could now be posting reports everyday except for Wednesday. I can, it's just that I have been having problems with my source of vessel information. I have now had this problem fixed and it should keep working for a while. I still trying to find out the problem, but in the meantime, I just wanted to let my viewers know I'm back and will start reporting through to the end of the shipping season if I don't encounter any problems.

I also wanted to say that I will have plenty of content to keep viewers busy during the off season of shipping on the Great Lakes. These include photos, featured vessels, and plenty of other things to keep you interested until the shipping season openings for 2014-2015.

I hope you will continue to visit my blog and will bear with me through the problems I may encounter.

Sincerely,

Jake Hill

St. Mary's Challenger Conversion Confirmed

I had a few minutes of my lunch break left, so I thought I would alert my readers of this sad event.

The St. Mary's Challenger, the oldest freighter on the Great Lakes, is scheduled to be converted into an Articulated Barge by Bay Shipbuilding Co. out of Sturgeon Bay, WI. At 107 years old, the ship needs a new engine, put costs approximately $15 million to $20 million to replace. Apparently, Port City Steamship Services cannot afford this, so they are converting her into a barge. Work is supposed to begin November 7 and the conversion is expected to be completed by May 2015. Work also includes building the articulated tug.

This is a sad end to the oldest freighter on the Lakes. Why not turn her into museum ship? She's piece of history. But I guess it's better than scrapping.

I also wanted to say that I will start reporting again in the next couple days. I just had a lot of problems and delays, but those have been fixed.

Richelieu Bound for Scrapyard

First of all, my source of information is still down. Who knows when It will be normal again. I not sure what to do if anything. So I figured I keep my blog going with some news.

The Richelieu departed lay-up in Montreal on Sunday, bound for Aliaga, Turkey for scrapping. She left under her own power. The Richelieu was built in 1981 and sailed for Canada Steamship Lines. This is the third ship to be scrapped this year, after the Algoma Provider and Phoenix Star. Her fleetmates Saguenay, Maplegeln, and Oakglen have been in lay-up since last year. Who knows what the future holds for them.

A salty arrived at a unknown dock. I can't find her name. This is Isle Royal's first commercial arrival of the season.

Announcement

I'm sad to announce that I will no longer be able to make End of the Month Reports, as it is pretty hard and tedious to keep track of hundreds of vessels for the whole year, for multiple reports. I will continue my July ones, then I will be done. Obviously, I will still post regular reports and Great Lakes news.

Thought I would put the word out that the staff of Boatnerd.com is looking for volunteers to help with their website. If you're interested, go to Boatnerd.com, go to News Channel and scroll down until you see the headline "Volunteers Wanted for Boatnerd".

Midway Through the Shipping Season...

We've reached the midway point of the shipping season and there are a lot of facts to be shared. Many ships haven't sailed this season. The majority of iron ore shipments have come from Two Harbors and Silver Bay so far. The majority of coal shipments have come from Superior and Sandusky. The majority of stone shipments have come from Port Inland, Rogers City, Presque Isle, and Marblehead. The majority of grain shipments have come from Thunder Bay. The majority of salt shipments have come from Goderich and Windsor. The majority of sand shipments have come from, of course, Brevort. All cement shipments have come from Charlevoix and Alpena.
According to my statistics and observations, Great Lakes Fleet has carried the most iron ore, American Steamship Company has carried the most coal, Lower Lakes Towing and Transportation have tied for carrying the most stone, Algoma Central Corporation has carried the most grain as the they have carried the most salt. Lower Lakes Towing has carried the most sand. Lafarge North America is tied with Port City Shipping for carrying the most cement. And odd spot loads of slag and fly ash have been loaded onto salties, Algoma Central Corporation vessels, and the Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41. Algoma Tankers has carried the most petroleum products.
A number of salties have visited the Great Lakes, carrying windmill parts, yachts, grain, coal, steel, slag, steel coils and various odd spot cargoes. Salty tankers have carried fair amounts of petroleum products.
Well that's my mid-season report and look out for my end of the season report in January. Thank tyou for visiting my blog and taking time to read my posts.
Sincerely,
Jake Hill

Tall Ships Set Sail for Duluth

Earlier this morning, the Tall Ships set sail for Duluth. As of 7:30 PM, the Pride of Baltimore 2 was a few miles northwest of the Keewenaw Peninsula. Behind her, the Denis Sullivan was entering the Keewenaw Waterway. And a few hours behind both of them, the flagship, Niagara, was just past Whitefish Point. The Tall Ships are expected to arrive through early tomorrow morning throughout the entire day and into the night. After this visit, they will head to Green Bay, then Chicago, and then back to their homeports.
